Time for the birthday update! Tristan and Nickolas are now 4 weeks old. They are doing so well! Their number of leashes has decreased quite a bit. They now only have their feeding tubes and the cords for the monitoring equipment. They are still continuing to gain weight, and every day we get news that one or the other has eaten just a bit better. They are currently taking feedings by mouth (bottle) every other feeding, and the other is through their feeding tube. They are taking entire bottles! This is a big and exciting step. Next is to start taking feedings by mouth every feeding. Yesterday I asked how soon they would start doing that. We don't want to push them into this if they aren't ready because its alot of work, and if they aren't ready they will resist. And then most likely start losing weight, which we definitely don't want. The nurse yesterday said they will let us know when they're ready. They will want to suck, no longer be satisfied by just the feeding tube, and right now they're ok with that. She continued to tell me that if she had to guess she'd say they'll be home in about a week! This is big news for two reasons: 1) She VOLUNTEERED that information- usually the staff won't give you a time frame when that will be because it can change so much day to day, and I didn't even ask her.
2) They're coming home soon! Do you hear that tapping? That's me doing the happy dance!
